Staff permissions

This is the capability-by-capability breakdown of Lyra’s school-side access model. For what the roles are for and how to invite, adjust, and remove staff, see Staff users.

Access is decided by three independent things:

LayerScopeValues
RoleSchoolLimited, Standard, or Admin — exactly one
Library managerLibraryGranted or not, per library, stacks on any role
Account ownerAccountGranted or not

None implies another. An account owner is not automatically a school admin; a school admin is not automatically a library manager.

Roles are cumulative — Admin includes everything Standard can do, and Standard includes everything Limited can do. The library-manager grant is not part of that ladder: it adds a separate set of powers to whatever role a person holds.

Every staff member of a school has these in every library of that school, whatever their role and with no library-manager grant.

Viewing the OPAC is read-only for anyone without the library-manager grant, Admins included. Changing it is a library-manager power. Until a library manager publishes the library’s OPAC, there’s nothing to view: staff who aren’t library managers see only a note saying so.

The roster is where the roles actually differ. Note that viewing a patron record is available to every role — what Limited loses is history, contact details, export, and sync, not the roster itself.

Granted per library. It adds the following in that library, on top of whatever the person’s role already allows. Every row here is unavailable without the grant, whatever the role — including to an Admin.

Capability
Add, edit, weed, merge, and delete items and copies
Add copies to an item; set a copy’s location, edition, or lost state
Edit metadata vocabularies — rename or delete authors, topics, tags, series, locations
Set the library’s circulation defaults
Create, edit, and delete item policies, grade-level overrides, faculty overrides
Assign an item policy to items
Run a catalog import, and resolve its records
Create and manage lists — reorder, rename, hide, set audience, add and remove items
Configure and manage the OPAC, including its web address
Set notice and student-notice settings
Change a due date away from the computed value
Reorder a hold queue (change hold priorities)
Un-assign a copy from a ready hold, reverting it to un-ready

The grant does not include roster editing or the library lifecycle — creating, renaming, or deleting a library. Those are admin powers, and an admin has them without the grant.

Account ownership is a separate, account-scoped layer covering billing, the subscription, the set of schools, and everyone’s access across them: an owner can give anyone ownership, a role at any school, or a library to manage. It grants no circulation, roster, or catalog access on its own. See Account governance.

RoleLibrary managerWho they are
Limited✗Volunteer or helper: runs the desk; no checkout history, no export, no sync.
Limited✓Catalog or tech-services helper: full manager powers, still no history, export, or sync.
Standard✗Circulation and roster staff: the desk plus full roster visibility and export; no catalog, policy, or OPAC.
Standard✓Librarian: full roster visibility plus manager powers for the libraries they run.
Admin✗School administrator: staff, libraries, settings, and roster editing; not a desk manager.
Admin✓Head librarian: everything inside the school.

Layer account ownership on top of any row when the same person also governs billing and the set of schools.
